What are Key Areas?
Key areas are main categories of the tasks on which you need to concentrate your efforts in order to reach your overall goals - both at home and at work.
A task is a name for the activities that you need to carry out in order to reach a specific goal.
An activity is one of the details that have to be done in order to complete a task.
Defining your key areas
There are two basically different approaches to identifying your key areas:
1. Start with your activities
Start with what you spend your time doing, i.e. your activities.
Ask yourself the questions: "What do I do?" "Which tasks do I have?"
"Which tasks your I like to have?" "Which activities belong to these tasks?"
List all the tasks and activities and group them logically. Give each group a heading, i.e. make each group a key area.
2. Start with your goals
Start by the overall requirements of your job and by seeing what you want to achieve. Ask yourself the question: "Which goals do I need to reach?" "What demands are placed on me?"
Then identify the main work areas, i.e. key areas that you need to concentrate your efforts on in order to reach your goals.
